About Urban Living Homestead
Welcome! I’m Richard, and I’m glad you’re here.
Based in the coastal county of West Sussex, UK, I created Urban Living Homestead to document a very specific mission: proving that you don’t need 50 acres in the middle of nowhere to live a self-sufficient, productive life.
The 3-Year Plan
Currently, I’m managing a productive urban plot while planning our family’s transition to a 3-bedroom smallholding or a larger off-grid setup here in West Sussex. My goal is to build a lifestyle that balances modern digital business with traditional homesteading skills—from rainwater harvesting and organic pest control to raising Pekin Bantams and foraging the local coastline.
Why I Share This Journey
In an era of rising costs and environmental shifts, I believe self-sufficiency is a “long game.” Whether it’s figuring out how to grow asparagus from seed in a British climate or rigging up a solar-powered pump to keep the garden alive during a dry spell, I share the “real-world” wins (and the failures) so you can do the same.
What you’ll find here:
Practical Gardening: Focus on long-game crops and organic methods (no chemicals, just common sense).
Off-Grid Solutions: DIY solar setups, water harvesting, and equipment troubleshooting.
The Urban Smallholding: Logistics of keeping livestock and managing a rented property for maximum yields.
